Is YOUR parent a 'deadbeat grandparent' to your child/children?

If so i'd love to have someone to talk to about this because I am in the same boat and don't know what to do about it.

I am in the process of writing a book about it because it's the only outlet I know of to get thr pain I feel about this 'out there', I'm doing it mainly for my own healing but would love other peoples storiies as well and if anything ever came of it anyone involved could be in it or not, at their diecretion, I just need someone to talk to mainly.

Hi.  Guess what? I'm sitting here in a blue funk googling things like "deadbeat grandparents."  They live right next door, too.  It's really taken me by suprise. Weird in so many ways. But enlightening too; I think the problem relates to some undiagnosed mental illness on the part of Grandpa.  Well, willing to chat about it with you if your so inclined.  I live in a very family oriented part of the country too, no one I know seems to have the same problem.  I have 2 darling girls age 5 and 2.

My son is turning 2 and my mother in law calls to me that she wont be there, she got  a call last night and has to be in a meeting. Now, The meetings she is talking about is for the American Legion, so she doesnt even get paid for this crap! Her grand daughters bday is two days away from my son, I bet she doesnt miss that one!

Don't like to vent about people BUT my kids unfortunately are stuck with cheap, self absorbed, self centered, money hungry, cheap grandparents. They never spent much time with any of their grandkids unless they were invited for some holiday or gathering. They have money saved because they never did anything with/or for with their own kids and to this day squeak by doing the absolute minimum. My wife and her siblings grew up without any heat in the house because they didn't want to spend the money. These were not poor people. I could understand that otherwise. They are also always looking for a freebee and they are very judgemental. We have a special needs child and they are useless with any support for that situation. All the grandkids could take em or leave em. They have the nerve to brag about the little they do and wear the greatest grandparent gear. Everyone in the family is always annoyed at them and they smell like mothballs. It is just unfortunate for the kids. My wife and I have fond memories of our grandparents and they had less but gave more. More time especially.

Thank God we live good and hopefully we will do it differently if we are ever blessed with grandkids.

Just curious..... did you ever write that book? it is now 2013 and your post was from 2008. I am currently going through this and it is very hurtful since they decided to move right next door! Trying not to let their self-centered, selfish ways get me down but inside i am truelly crushed and there is no talking to them about it.

My in laws moved about 8 hours away and have barely nothing to do with my two boys. I am done with them, have not been involved for 8 years, why try and force it now?My husband has tried and they will call more frequently and ask to talk to the boys but then it will die off again. My husband is no confrontational and finally has told them how he feels but always gives them another chance. But it is always the same. What really took the cake recently was after 30 days of not hearing from them, his mother says "I see them on Facebook all the time!!" I couldn't believe it, I am embarrassed to even admit that to people.
